This session will cover the fundamental physiology in relation to body water and fluid therapy. How fluid moves within the body is important in determining the effect of different types of fluid and this underpinning knowledge can help to predict the effect of administering fluids. Additionally we will start to examine the question of ‘is fluid therapy harmful?’
Key points to be covered:
How can fluids be administered? What equipment is realistic in a general practice setting? This session will also demystify the large variety of fluid types and highlight when to choose a specific product. The second part of this webinar will focus on the administration of colloids and blood products with particular emphasis on patient safety and relevant evidence.
Key points to be covered:
How can we determine the effect of administering fluids? Are we administering too much or too little? What are the current recommendations for fluid therapy in anaesthetised patients? The last hour of this series will discuss some specific case examples in detail, why particular fluids are chosen (e.g. during haemorrhage or sepsis), how fast to administer that fluid and by which route.
