Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric condition presenting to primary care practitioners. Patients with anxiety disorders experience a decreased quality of life and benefit tremendously from effective management of their condition. This session will review the diagnosis and management of anxiety disorders in the primary care setting.

Dr. Heather Aguirre is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is currently working towards her board certification in Obesity Medicine. She earned her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth Texas. Following graduation, she completed her residency at Christus Spohn Family Medicine Residency Program in Corpus Christi where she served as Chief Resident. Dr. Aguirre is currently in private practice and serves as Medical Director at Rollins Brooks Center for Wound Care in Lampasa, Texas. She is also the Vice-President for Central Texas Wound Healing Associates.
Dr. Lori Kels is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Clinical and Applied Science Education at UIWSOM. She received her BS in marketing from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her MD from the University of Nevada and her MPH from the University of Southern California. Dr. Kels completed her residency in psychiatry at the George Washington University, where she served as chief resident. She is board certified in psychiatry.
Dr. Kels has a clinical interest in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders in women, particularly during pregnancy and the postpartumperiod. Her research interests include mental health in medical education and novel treatments for mood disorders.
