Description

Attendees will be able to diagnose and initially manage CKD in the outpatient setting. Attendees will be able to discuss medication and disease modification, and they will learn when to refer to nephrology.

Learning Objectives:
•    Understand the relationship between CKD and CV  disease and mortality rate.
•    Understand the general mechanisms for progression of CKD, including alterations of neuroendocrine systems, growth factors, cytokines, decreased nephron mass, lipids, and proteinuria.
•    Understand how CKD manifests as anemia, blood clotting, infection risk, bone metabolism, acidosis, hyperuricemia, and effects of an intervention.
•    Understand the roles of glucose and blood pressure control in CKD.

Accreditation Statements:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation.

Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Creditä.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Dr. Baldwin graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM) in 1983. He completed a rotating internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine – Midwestern University and a fellowship in Renal Disease and Hypertension at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Baldwin is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and as a Medical Examiner by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He is also certified as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension.

During his twenty-plus years in private practice in Columbus, Ohio, he was actively involved in all medical education levels. He developed and taught the renal curriculum at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine for fifteen years. Dr. Baldwin is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Yakima, Washington. He is involved in research on chronic kidney disease in agricultural workers and has received numerous teaching awards.
